Success with tourist attractions campaign

The Design Museum with parking

Following our campaign to encourage London's landmarks to improve their cycling facilities and promote cycling to visitors, some of London's biggest tourist attractions have taken action.

The campaign came about after LCC compiled a survey which showed that about half of London's top 20 tourist attractions did not promote cycling on the travel information section of their websites or had inadequate or non-existent cycle parking. LCC urged members to write to tourist attractions urging them to "put cycling on the map", with improved information and facilities.

Among the successes so far are:

  • The British Museum, which has pledged to change travel information for visitors with greater focus on travel by public transport or bicycle.

  • The V & A Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, east London, which is to install cycle racks in its grounds after being contacted by LCC members.

  • The National Gallery, which provides parking facilities and is now providing information about this cycle parking on its website.

  • London Zoo which has provided information on getting to the zoo by car, bus, riverboat and London Underground says it will now also provide information on cycling.

  • Arsenal Football Club, which now has comprehensive information about cycle access on its website and provides a secure cycle parking area on matchdays.

  • The Tower of London, which is looking to add bicycle information to its website and other materials.

Tom Bogdanowicz, campaigns manager at LCC, said: "It's great news that the city's top tourists attractions are listening to cyclists and improving their cycle information and facilities. It also sends out a message to our millions of overseas visitors that London wants to be seen as a world-class cycling city."

Despite the success of the campaign, many of London's most popular attractions, including Madame Tussauds, Kensington Palace and the London Eye failed to provide either adequate cycle facilities or information on cycle parking.

Many thanks to City Cyclists whose idea inspired the campaign.

LCC provides advice and information for tourist attractions that wish to welcome visitors who arrive by cycle. Recent surveys show that where cycle facilities are provided they are well used. Click on 'Working with businesses' to learn more about how we can help.
